HAND-HEWN CRAFTSMANSHIP

Welcome

We are Adirondack-based builders specializing in the design and construction of timber frames and many aspects of fine carpentry and woodwork. We work with locally, mindfully sourced wood and quality building materials, and partner with other like-minded tradespeople to further support the local economy.

Timber Framing is equal parts structure and sculpture. It is a millennia-old process for framing structures using large format, intersecting tree parts generally in the form of milled timbers. Frames can also consist of hewn timbers or more natural forms: logs sawn on two faces or left in the round. The joinery, various forms of the loyal mortise and tenon, looks and functions much like what you would find within a piece of well-joined furniture.

Intentional design, thoughtful client communication, and attention to detail characterize our approach to Fine Carpentry. This embodies a keen understanding of home performance principles and the ability to execute a high level of craft.

Woodwork is a key piece to our holistic approach as builders. This soulful workmanship can come in different forms but it all has beauty and utility for the home in common. We craft custom pieces of furniture and a select variety of unique objects. Woodenware — bowls, cups, spoons, and the like — are created from foraged hardwoods from the surrounding forest. We will happily work with you on commisioned woodwork, big or small.

GREG KATZ

© Pedro Diez

Greg hails from the amorphous coloquialism that is “upstate” New York. His formative years found him tucking into life in the more northerly Adirondacks. The allure and subsequent trials of building and woodworking led him to an opportunity as a timber framing apprentice at the storied Heartwood School in the Berkshires. In the years since, he has worked on a variety of projects ranging from building-science-laden new construction to hand-tool-rich restoration work. When not making heaps of wood detritus, he enjoys time with his wife and kids in the forests, waters, and on their endearingly scrappy homestead.
